The Family Secret
Cannoli Castle – Looks Great impressions & Revices
My families roots hale from Naples and Agira, Sicily coming to Ellis Island off New York in the 1920’s by sailing on the Italian ocean liner, the “Dante” and bringing with them a rich heritage of Italian culture and dishes of many varieties. None is better however than the cannoli. My mother, her mother, and many mothers before her perfected the Caravella version of the Sicilian cannoli improving on the traditional version by lightening the creamy filling while maintaining the traditional flavor and diminishing the sugar content that in many cannoli’s becomes overwhelming.
The current role of the cannoli is major not only in Italy, but also within Italian-American households everywhere. The presentation of this dessert is essential. People tend to buy the cannoli because it looks so elegant and delicious.
The average Italian-American family usually has Sunday dinners and cannolis are often included not just as a sweet treat, but also as a dish that fosters relationships within the family. The cannoli brings people together, while serving as a great tasting dessert.
